The concept is straightforward: upon receiving the green beans from all the producers, we have each harvest graded. The woman whose washed coffee gets the highest score is chosen for that period’s Best Batch. This woman is not only recognized as Chica Bean’s Best Batch but she also receives an additional 20% quality incentive. Through Chica Bean’s Best Batch, we ensure producers are being directly rewarded for growing high-quality coffee and that you, our customer, are enjoying the absolute best that our Chica’s are creating.
Starting with exceptional coffee seeds and applying a skillful medium roast, our Best Batch is a rare coffee that shines in all methods of preparation, from an everyday drip machine to a delicate Chemex. We recommend always trying the first 2 sips of your cup of coffee without any additives to experience its natural goodness, but after, if its your preference, a bit of sweetener doesn’t harm this coffee. Depending on brew method and taste, a splash of milk could work but this coffee is best enjoyed black.
This period’s Best Batch comes from Ms. Susy D! Susy is a young mother of 2 beautiful girls, a complete jokester, and the perfect example of the word “pilas,” a word that literally translated as battery but we use it to describe people who get things done. As an example, the first coffee we got from Susy during the 2018-2019 harvest was actually some of the lowest quality coffee of all of our producers. However, in December of 2019, right before the harvest started, we brought in a processing expert to work with the women. Susy was dedicated during this training and even took up a demonstrative role for the other women. After just 1 year of working with the new practices, she gave us an 87 SCA coffee! That increase in such little time is unheard of! That’s Susy for ya!

This coffee was delicious! I prefer it brewed in small batches as it’s too rich for me to drink several cups of it, like I would a less artisanal coffee. A little goes a long way. I loved that the coffee came with a description of the woman who grew it! I would definitely recommend signing up for a subscription. You can choose as little as one bag a month and it comes with free shipping. And now I’ll have Chica Bean coffee year-round without having to do anything!
